Teaching - Fellowship Programs
The Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine has an active, highly regarded fellowship program for anesthesiology and pediatric critical care.

The ACGME-accredited Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship, under the direction of Gary M. Scott, MD, FAAP, attracts applicants from throughout the U.S. and internationally. Fellows receive excellent clinical experience in all surgical specialties, including organ transplantation. Training includes opportunities to administer anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and as a consultant for the Comfort and Pain Management Program. Five to seven positions are open annually for the one-year fellowship.

The Critical Care Fellowship typically has nine fellows in training. This selective, accredited program has earned a reputation as the best-matched Critical Care Program in the U.S. Attendings and Fellows provide clinical coverage in both the PICU and the CTICU, providing broad-based opportunities for research and education. Fellowship director is Christopher Newth, MD, also the Department's director of research.

Fellows in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit receive training in the preoperative and postoperative management of infants and children with congenital heart disease, including exposure to complex single-ventricle physiology, transplantation medicine, mechanical assist devices and cardiac anesthesia.

Anesthesia practitioners can participate in the Department's annual Clinical Conference in Pediatric Anesthesia, which typically takes place each January. Since its debut in 1963, the Conference has grown to one of the largest pediatric anesthesiology meetings in the U.S. and has hosted many of the pioneers and "greats" in this specialty. It remains the oldest, continual annual conference of its kind. For information, please contact: [contact info]
