The CHLA Comfort and Pain Management Program (CCPMP) is a comprehensive and cross-functional health care unit that is dedicate to the prevention and treatment of pain and fear for children and their families.

The membership of the CCPMP includes:

  • two pediatric anesthesiologists
  • an intensivist
  • a pediatric pain specialist
  • two nurse practitioners
  • a pediatric psychologist
  • a patient care services director
  • departmental chief administrator.
The mission of our program is to maximize the comfort of children and their families by alleviating pain and fear.

Through our leadership in clinical care, education and research, we will create an environment in which an interdisciplinary, family-centered approach is used to address the biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of pain and fear.

Our comprehensive team is dedicated to prevention and treatment of pain and fear in children throughout their hospitalization and outpatient care. The Comfort & Pain Management Program addresses the biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of pain and fear with an interdisciplinary, family-centered approach.

The Magik (making aches go-away in kids) Inpatient Service cares for more than 1,800 patients each year. It provides daily pain management to hospitalized children, along with consultative services to medical and surgical staff. In addition to pain assessments, the team offers medication management, coordination of other therapies and integration with other disciplines to achieve a complete treatment plan.

The Magik Outpatient Chronic Pain Clinic follows nearly 150 patients a year, providing assistance with complex and/or long-term pain issues. Along with assessment and management services, it offers individual and family therapy; breathing, relaxation and imagery training; counseling on parenting issues; education and coordination of services.

The Comfort & Pain Management team also provides oversight and coordination of the Integrated Touch Program (massage therapy) and the Love on 4 Paws Program, pet-assisted therapy for hospitalized children.
