The Division of Anesthesiology
Pediatric anesthesiologists care for children of all ages who have a wide range of medical conditions - from fragile newborns and babies with surgical emergencies to children with birth defects and life-threatening diseases. Numerous studies have demonstrated improved surgical outcomes when a pediatric anesthesiologist is present.

Our attending physicians are board certified in anesthesiology and dedicated to a pediatric practice. Several also are board certified in pediatrics and pain management.

The Department has the advantage of working in the hospital's Burtie Green Bettingen Surgery Center. Its 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms include today's most sophisticated anesthesia equipment. Patient documentation is handled by an automated, online, computerized system, which increases accuracy and flexibility.

Family members have the opportunity to meet with their child's anesthesiologist before surgery, when he or she will explain the process of anesthesia and answer questions. Parents or guardians also can be present when anesthesia is given and when the child wakes after surgery.

Research & Education

The Department has contributed significantly to anesthesia literature over the past several decades, furthering the understanding and growth of this specialty. The integration of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine into one department, as of 2001, has served to solidify our commitment to research.
